Opera Presents Doctor Miracle

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Opera program, under the direction of George Hogan, will present three performances of Doctor Miracle on Friday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Hughes Recital Hall of Presser Hall on the UMHB campus.

Doctor Miracle, a comedic one-act opera composed by Charles Lecocq premiered in 1857 in Paris. The libretto, which was originally written by Léon Battu and Ludovic Halévy, has been translated into English by Hogan for the performance.

Doctor Miracle tells the story of a young man, Silvio, and his quest to marry his true love, the mayor’s daughter. After the mayor rejects him as a suitor, Silvio infiltrates the mayor’s home as a newly hired servant and proceeds to cook up a “poison” omelet.  He later returns in the guise of a doctor with a prescription that can save the mayor from his inevitable doom.

This concert qualifies as a Fine Arts Experience (FAE) credit for UMHB students. Tickets to the performances are $5 and can be purchased online from umhbopera.com, during business hours this week from the College of Visual & Performing Arts Main Office, Presser Hall 208, and in the foyer of Hughes Recital Hall one hour prior to each performance.
