Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Music Department will host the 13th Annual Percussion Festival on Friday, January 17, and Saturday, January 18. The Festival will kick off with a free concert Friday at 7:30 p.m., featuring the UMHB Percussion Ensemble and guest percussion artist Dr. Michael Varner with bassoonist, Scott Pool, in the Hughes Recital Hall of Presser Hall on the UMHB campus. A master class will also be held for area percussion students Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in Hughes Recital Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
Varner is Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, a position he has held for the past 35 years. He directs the Percussion Ensembles and World Music Ensembles. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, a Master’s Degree in Performance from The University of Michigan, and a Doctorate in Performance from the University of North Texas. He has performed internationally throughout Europe and Asia.
